The Probability Marvel

This incident is motivated by the "It happened to me" section of Tinkle comics. If you don't know of this comic, you must get one and repent that no one got you one as soon as you started to read and understand English.

After having my really delicious set-dosa beakfast in the mess, and as I was walking out of the mess, I greeted one of the food mess employees today morning "Deepavali habbadha hardhika shubhashayagalu" (Diwali wishes in Kannada), I realized he was as interested as I was in striking a smalltalk. Two other employees joined us in no time and we were laying a foundation for the gossip-castle. The topic was, loopholes of the security @ IISc or should we call it the loop-potholes? (There isn't a wikipedia entry for this word, I searched!).

They wanted an update on the Thief who was caught in IISc boys hostel apartment. I told them that the seemingly speech-impaired chap spoke in three different languages when he was interrogated by the cops.

Next came the topic, who is to be blamed here? The security of IISc or is it the students who never lock their doors. In this particular incident the aftermath revealed to us that the student was snoring in his apartment with the door left unlatched, and our street-smart thief entered the room and silently made the room laptop-less. My mess-employee friends raised their brows and pointed fingers at me and started off saying "You careless IIScians students never lock your doors, it is the mistake of the students too....." and before he could continue his sentence, I stopped him  and told him the following:

"Wait!, don't you think if you walk for 60 kms at a stretch, you will trip in a couple of places? On similar lines, given the 1000+ apartments in our hostel block where 1000+ students reside, there will surely be a couple of them who would have forgotten to latch the door before going to bed. Don't we  forget to lock our bikes or switch off the gas stove on a monthly basis atleast?"

They totally agreed with me with a smile on their face. (Man! I should've been a politician, I don't mind being one now! I don't mind being a corrupt one too! Thats the best way to own the country's hard earned fortune - and hence own its future as well!)

I left with a sense of accomplishment with my chin up for having snubbed them with my example. I entered my apartment complex and as I unpocketed my keys to unlock my door I had the shock of my life.

"For the first time ever during my stay @IISc, I had been to the mess without locking my door"

Don't believe me is it? I am with you! I couldn't believe myself too O:-)

  2. A great coincidence no doubt, but not of very low probability either, IMHO. This is because the probability of noticing your door is not locked just when you had a conversation about locking doors is very high.
